Centre Profile
The Nansen Environmental Research Centre (India) (NERCI) is a non-profit environmental research, training and consultancy centre, established in 1999 as a joint-venture between Indian and Norwegian partners.

Our aim:
The overall aim of NERCI is to provide an impetus to environmental and earth sciences research and applications in India through local capacity building as well as increased regional and global cooperation.

Expertise:
Satellite remote sensing data analysis and interpretation for ocean and coastal zone applications, Algorithm development and implementation for satellite remote sensing data analysis. Development and implementation of computer-based numerical models of the ocean and the coastal ecosystem. Design of monitoring strategies and analysis of field measurements in the ocean and coastal zone. Development and implementation of robust data assimilation schemes for optimising numerical model simulations using available field and satellite remote sensing data. Development and implementation of marine and coastal information systems to facilitate integration of information from field measurements, satellite remote sensing data and numerical model simulations in order to provide products tailored to specific needs. Processing, analysis and interpretation of environmental information from diverse sources to support planning and management. Environmental impact assessment.

Approach:
An integrated approach involving the analysis of field data and remote sensing data as well as numerical model simulations is followed. The development of data assimilation techniques and Geographical and Marine Information Systems for the optimal integration of information sources for monitoring and forecasting environmental systems is accorded high priority.

Education /Training and dissemination:
Supervision of masters and doctoral investigations. Teaching specialised courses at the university level. Organisation and participation in workshops and seminars. Dissemination of research results at conferences, in scientific journals, magazines, newspapers, television, radio and internet.

Consultancy:
Environmental impact assessment,Pollution monitoring and forecasting Coastal erosion monitoring and forecasting Extreme value statistics for design of offshore structures, Siting of effluent outlets, coastal structures and pipelines.

Cooperation:
NERCI has established cooperation with the following institutes:

• Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin
• Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad
• Anna University, Chennai
• Space Application Centre (Ahmedabad)

NERCI actively seeks associations with other Indian and foreign institutions for formulating and conducting projects in environmental and earth sciences.
