Research

Areas

Monsoon and ocean variability, Climate Change, Sea level variations

Objective:

  • To understand monsoon variability on all time and spatial scales and its relation to ocean.

  • To improve the understanding of climatic teleconnections between the higher latitudes and the tropics.

  • Indo-Pacific Ocean will be the focal area of study..

Marine Ecosystem studies with focus on forcing mechanisms and algal blooms

Objective:

  • To improve the description of bio-optical and physical interactions of the estuaries, coastal regions and open ocean; quantification of algae and water quality parameters and understanding forcing mechanisms.

  • To build up specialized knowledge to develop algorithms needed; validation of geophysical products from the new satellite sensors and application in research and operational services.

Coastal Zone Management and Societal issues

Objective:

  • To undertake water quality monitoring studies and suggest ecofriendly mitigative measures.

  • Hazard study in relation to monsoon, sea level change and harmful algal blooms.

  • Initiate activities on EIA for industries to be established in the coastal zone.

  • Dissemination of the scientific knowledge on coastal zone through awareness programmes.
