Prof. Kurup also played an active role in NERCI’s scientific activities, particularly during the implementation of the EU FP7-funded INDO-MARECLIM project (2012-2015). He was so instrumental in signing an MoU with NERCI and Nansen Centre, Norway and KUFOS for exchange of research students between the MoU partners which is still progressing well. He also laid the foundation for longstanding collaboration between NERCI and KUFOS and has provided valuable guidance to NERCI to become a recognised research centre of KUFOS for more than a decade now. He was a regular presence and a lead speaker at the conferences and symposia conducted by NERCI, attending almost all such events and engaging wholeheartedly in the scientific discussions. His consistent involvement reflected his commitment to fostering scientific exchange and supporting the Centre’s endeavours.
His passing is a profound loss to NERCI and the wider scientific community. We will fondly remember his valuable advice, his active engagement and his sincere interest in the growth of our institution. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, students and all those whose lives he touched.
Prof. Dr. B. Madhusoodana Kurup
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Prof. Dr. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, a distinguished academic and researcher whose contributions to marine and fisheries sciences will be remembered with gratitude.
As a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Nansen Environmental Research Centre India (NERCI), Prof. Kurup provided invaluable scientific guidance and support, contributing to the Centre’s development. His suggestions for strengthening and advancing the Centre were always relevant, forward-looking and well suited to the needs and priorities of the time.
Kochi, September 8, 2026: Project MOUSAM (Monitoring, Observation and Understanding for Sustainability Awareness and Mitigation), a student action programme aimed at building climate-ready schools across Ernakulam district, was launched on September 8, 2026, at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, Kochi, Keralam.
The project, jointly implemented by Nansen Environmental Research Centre (India) (NERCI) and Center for Earth Research and Environment Management(CEREM), with support from the CSR initiative of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), will engage students from 16 schools across Ernakulam district over a period of 24 months. Research Activites
